The 6th Annual Basic Science International Conference (BaSIC 2016) (Mar. 2-3, 2016)

The Faculty of Engineering, Gifu University jointly organized the 6th Annual Basic Science International Conference (BaSIC 2016) with one of our faculty-level partners, Brawijaya University in Malang, Indonesia on March 2 and 3, 2016. At the conference, 8 faculty members and 6 graduate students from Gifu gave research presentations, including two keynote speakers, Prof. Shuichi Nonomura (Department of Electrical, Electronic, and Computer Engineering) and Prof. Mutsuhiro Shima (Department of Chemistry and Biomolecular Science), as well as two invited speakers, Associate Prof. Okihiro Sawada (Department of Electrical, Electronic, and Computer Engineering) and Associate Prof. Lee Wah Lim (Department of Chemistry and Biomolecular Science).

More than 300 international participants mainly from Indonesia and Malaysia attended plenary lectures and poster presentations in the morning sessions, and talks given in the afternoon parallel sessions in 6 separate rooms. Although students with little experience in presenting in English appeared to be pretty nervous at the beginning of their talks, they soon became much more confident with dignity and were able to answer questions appropriately. At the closing ceremony held on the second day, it was announced that one of the three best poster awards was granted to Assistant Prof. Kyyoul Yun (Department of Electrical, Electronic, and Computer Engineering). The conference was successfully concluded in a friendly atmosphere after closing remarks were delivered to the participants.

On March 4, the members from Gifu University paid a visit to Brawijaya University in Malang and joined a campus tour to the research laboratories and administrative offices guided by Dr. Akhmad Sabarudin, Brawijaya’s liaison for Gifu. It was impressive to find students actively talking and studying on the beautiful and greenery campus.

Although this was the first time to visit Malang for most of the participants from Gifu, they enjoyed interacting with researchers from various countries at the conference and attending the guided tour at Brawijaya University in the short, but fruitful time.
