Research fields

Most of our research activities are related to colloidal systems. Projects on nano-structure formation and clarification of interfacial phenomena of colloidal systems are the recent topics.

1. Nano-structure formation of colloidal systems
Thoroughly deionized colloidal particles form colloidal crystals in dispersion liquid. The crystals show beautiful iridescence due to the Bragg reflection. The drying dissipative structure caused by self-organization of colloidal particles is the simplest way to fabricate many nano architectures. Further, it is possible to construct higher-order nano-structures using segregation effect of colloidal mixtures.

2. Photonic effects of colloidal crystals
The lattice spacing of the colloidal crystals matches with wavelength range of visible light. Therefore, many photonic effects are expected for colloidal crystals due to the interference and diffraction of light. We have reported the photon trapping effects and an enhancement of electronic excitation energy transfer efficiency of colloidal crystals.

3. Clarification of interfacial phenomena of colloidal systems
Colloidal systems have a large specific surface area, and therefore many interesting interfacial phenomena are expected. Some of our recent subjects are the clarification of adsorption mechanism of colloidal systems.
