Research fields

Fundamental research for developments of silicon (Si) thin film solar cells with higher performances.

1. Estimation of optical absorption coefficients in Si thin films by photothermal radiometry. Using this method, we can estimate spin densities of Si thin films with any areas by non-contact and non-destructive manner.
2. Estimation of carrier diffusion length of hydrogenated microcrystalline Si (mc-Si:H) films by surface photovoltage method. The mc-Si:H films are covered with thin (about 10 nm) hydrogenated amorphous Si (a-Si:H) film for passivation of the surface in mc-Si:H. This is the fundamental study for the following theme.
3. Developments of heterojunction-type Si thin film solar cells. In this study, mc-Si:H film is employed for the active layer of the cell. The cell consists of, at present, SUS(substrate) / n-type mc-Si:H / undoped mc-Si:H / thin a-Si:H / p-type a-Si:H / ITO / Al.

These studies will be extended to other materials for solar cells and search of novel materials for solar cells will be planned.
