Research fields

(1) Fracture of concrete and concrete structures, including the fracture of concrete as a construction material, the failure and cracking of steel-bar reinforced concrete members, and the collapse and damage of concrete structures, such as bridges, dams and so forth.

(2) High performance fiber reinforced cement composites (HPFRCC), including the mix design, the performance evaluation and the structural applications of this material showing large deformation and multiple fine cracks under tensile force. HPFRCC, which contains high-density polyethylene short fibers at a volume ratio of around 1%, is applied to the repair and new construction of road and railway concrete structures. It is also referred to as SHCC, strain-hardening fiber-reinforced cement composites.

(3) Maintenance of concrete structures, including the prevention of deterioration, the diagnosis of cracking and damage, and the repair and strengthening of concrete structures such as bridges, dams and so forth, in order to use these structures safely for a long time.
