Research fields

Discovery of novel natural products contributes to the development of biology, industry or pharmacology. As a result of the efforts by natural product chemists, a lot of useful compounds have been found and used in many fields.
In particular, the large size natural products other than peptide or glycan will be important targets in the field of natural product chemistry study, because many of the natural products discovered so far have been relatively small size compounds. Even some of these compounds have significant biological activity, their complex structures hamper the study on the mode of action of them. However, through a combination of new synthetic chemical methods and the development of instrumental analysis, chemical studies of the large compounds with complex structures are becoming possible.
We focus on the large size natural products which are not biopolymers, explore them from microalgae, elucidate their chemical structures, and study their mode of action and roles in the nature.
