Research fields

Many of our research projects are concerned with ceramic processing. We are interested in the ①forming and sintering process of nanoparticles, and flash sintering of ceramics.
Although the sinterability is expected to be improved for using nanoparticles as the starting powder, those tendency to build agglomerates results in the heterogeneous structure of the green body. We thoroughly investigate forming and sintering behavior of nanoparticles, and try to develop an innovative processing for nanoceramics. Sor far, we have succeeded in fabrication of translucent tetragonal zirconia by gelcasting of zirconia nano-slurry (Fig.1)
Flash sintering is a newly developed technique to quickly densify conductive ceramics in the presence of an electric field. At a critical combination of field and temperature, densification takes place in a few seconds(Fig.2). We investigate the mechanisms of this unique technology, and try to apply to novel materials. The materials in ongoing research projects for flash sintering are zirconia and solid electrolyte.
